Information about our classes

Coaches: Classes will be taught by Shane Kaye (Saturday) and Nicola Stroud (Sunday)

Where to meet: At Burnham & Berrow Golf Club. Depending on the plan for that session we will either meet by the putting green or driving range, both of which are located next to the pro shop.

Parents watching: Due to safety with space available it is not possible for parents to stay and watch group lessons. The clubhouse is always open so why not take the time to relax and enjoy a nice cup of tea from the club house. There’s always a great opportunity to watch your child play in our break par matches. (But quick reminder no jeans in the club house please). For all activities outside group lessons students under 10 years of age must have parent supervision.

Golf Clubs: We have junior friendly equipment that we use the first few weeks, but if your child does have clubs feel free to bring them. If you currently do not have a set of clubs, we recommend waiting until the first day where we will measure your child’s height and give you our best recommendations.

What to wear: We recommend the juniors wear athletic apparel or golf clothing (polo shirt) with trainers. In the colder months, we would advise layering as they can always remove layers once they warm up. We do ask for jeans not to be worn please.

On Course experience: We play a match (Break Par) once a month where the juniors start at 25 yards from the centre of the green and have to achieve a score of 36 over 9 holes to progress back to the next yardage. But we also encourage the juniors to play as much as they can out of class time.

Membership: With Academy Junior membership your child will enjoy classes, the monthly Break Par match, access to the practice facilities, 9-hole course, clubhouse, a free range token each day, junior golf shirt and a members discount card. Once a handicap is achieved your child can apply for Channel Course Junior membership which will enable your child to play in club competitions and represent the club in matches.

Payment: The Golf Club Office will bill your account on a monthly basis through a direct debit. Payments for Saturday classes are still made through school holidays as the total amount has been divided over a 12 month period. There is also an annual fee of £36 for the Academy Junior membership.

Junior Pathway to The Championship Course

Step 1: Join Academy (Academy Junior), attend coaching sessions, roll ups, development game sessions, play the Channel Course (accompanied) and gain handicap and ‘playing card’.

Complete cards for handicap. When ready to gain handicap, this can be achieved on the Junior tees by handing in 6 x 9 hole rounds.

Step 2: Upgrade to Channel Course Junior (additional charge of £50 & no restriction on playing privileges) – continue coaching where applicable. Play in club competitions and represent the club in matches.

Step 3: Upgrade to Championship Course when space/handicap allows. To progress on to The Championship course a minimum of 3 competitions to be completed from the adult tees of The Channel Course. Handicap of 26 (male) 34 (female) to be achieved.

3 months settling in period (playing with mentors) before entering competitions.

Progression to Championship Course.

Between step 2 and 3: Juniors may be selected for the ‘Horizon’ squad with Lee Corfield with an aim to reduce handicap over the course of the sessions and therefore gain access to the Championship Course – space permitting. This is aimed at home club Juniors who have a handicap and need some further support to get their handicap over the line. (Additional charge).
