Seniors Away Day.
What a day Monday the 26th July turned out to be for the twenty-three Burnham Seniors who boarded the coach at 8. 30 am for the away day at The Dorset Golf and Country Club. The journey was pleasant with the odd obstruction as we passed through Dorchester at a very busy time. On arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff and the notice board that welcomed the Seniors to their Club. Hot bacon baps and coffee were provided and after using the complimentary basket of balls on the range the competition began.
Alan Cook, Seniors Captain, announced the team sheets and in fact started the day off in partnership with David Phillips.
Team two were Mike Armstrong, Geoff Sloman and Trevor Jenkins.
Team three with Robin Griffiths, Club Captain, Adrian Beaumont and Lawrie Summers looked strong.
Team four were Jerry Linscott, John Schroeder and Martin Plant
Team five saw John Pascall, Andy Towens and Adrian Markwell struggle on both halves.
Team six also looked a strong line-up with Frank Matthews, Frank Ryan and Rod Gait.
Team seven were Colin Allsopp, Brian Cains and George King.
Team eight were Tony Williams, Martin Harryman and John McAllister.
It was certainly one of the hottest days this summer and the heat began to tell on most of us long before the end of the round. The course was well presented with good receptive greens but as with so many courses at this time there were the odd hard bounce that took the ball off in strange directions. This did not distract from the enjoyment of the course or the spirit of the game.
Prior to Dinner we were treated to a spot of comedy from John Schroeder who decided the drinks were on him, and everyone else who happened to be sat close to him on the patio. In a vain attempt to dispose of a fly John managed to launch his full pint glass of lager two foot into the air to then crash, smash and drench all around him. He just couldn't strike a balance let alone a fly.
After an excellent evening meal with coffee, and following several toast to the Seniors Section, the Club and various other notables, Trevor Jenkins, Seniors Secretary, stated that they were all winners on this day but that we were also playing for prizes. He then announced the prize-winners.
The David Osborne Putter was won by Alan Cook, Seniors Captain.
Club Captain, Robin Griffiths was runner-up.
The Team Prize went to Mike Armstrong, Geoff Sloman and Trevor Jenkins.
Longest Drive went to Rod Gait.
Nearest the Pin shared between Brian Cains and George King.
There then followed a fair amount of good humoured banter with the odd funny story thrown in, quickly to be thrown out again by Lawrie Summers who was performing better in the dining room than he was out on the course according to his playing partners.
Robin Griffiths, Club Captain, then thanked the Seniors Section for the support they have given to Club matches and for their contributions towards the success of Burnham & Berrow Golf Club.
The coach left promptly at 7.30pm and on arrival at Burnham I was amused to see the driver alight the coach waving a pair of grey trousers and shouting “whose are these”. After close examination it was indeed even funnier to see Lawrie raise his arm and own up to them belonging to him. The mind boggles.
All in all, this was an excellent day out for all who supported this away day and we hope there will be a few more Seniors members joining the party next year.
