SENIORS OPEN SUCCESS

Burnham & Berrow Seniors Open.

On Monday 19th July the Burnham & Berrow Seniors Open attracted an entry of 137 including 97 visitors from various Golf Clubs throughout the country. They were all treated to a warm, sunny and pleasant day on our links course which they also found in extremely good condition.

It started at 8.00 am, as has been the custom for the past five years, with Richard Lane striking the first tee shot straight down the middle and so the 2010 Seniors Open was under way.

There were several good scores posted and with sixteen 2’s recorded there should have been considerably more decent scores but the course takes no prisoners and if you do stray too far off line you get punished, as quite a few of the competitors found to their cost. Nevertheless, every single visitor said they had enjoyed their visit and would like to return.

Congratulations and thanks were expressed by Trevor Jenkins, Seniors’ Secretary, to Elizabeth Sloman who was greatly involved on the day with the scorecards and all that it entailed along with thanks to Jane Pitcher, Sandra Lawrence, Sue Reading and Julia Nuttall of the Ladies Section who acted as starters. Martin Harryman was also thanked for spotting for a long time out on the 10th hole.

Gratitude was also passed on to the Green Staff, Caterers and the Bar Staff for their contribution towards the success of the day and Christine in the office who was available to assist with some of the paperwork.

The presentation of prizes then took place with Alan Cook, Seniors Captain, handing out congratulations and prizes to those fortunate enough to be among the winners.

The Longest Drive was won by G. Mace of Cotswold Hills.

Nearest the Pin on the 17th was George Jennings of Burnham & Berrow.

There were 16 2's recorded on the day and each won a sleeve of ProV1 golf balls.

In the Visitors over 70’s category J. Hall of Filton Golf Club took the honours with 36 points and George Davies for Burnham with 34 points.

The Visitors best score was G. Hull of Cumberwell Park with 39 points from R. Broome, Filton and C. Davies of The Mendip.

For Burnham it was Martin Wilkins in 2nd place from Alan Cook 3rd and George Jennings 4th.

However, the overall winner of the Seniors Open was John Pascall with a creditable 42 points which deserved to win the Trophy. In his victory speech John paid tribute to all those who had worked so hard on this Open.

After presenting the prizes Alan Cook, the Seniors Captain, thanked Trevor Jenkins, Seniors’ Secretary, for organising the Seniors Open and for making certain that everything ran smoothly.

Both speeches met with loud applause and the meeting concluded with Trevor thanking everyone for their support and wishing them all a safe journey home.
